In 1861, notary and renowned plant- and orchid collector Jean-Baptiste Beaucarne "discovered" a striking botanical specimen with elegant fine leaves and a massive trunk during an expedition in Mexico and he brought the plant back to Huis Beaucarne.
He was the first grower in Europe succeeding in successfully growing this plant in one of his greenhouses in his garden in Ename.
Thanks to this achievement, the plant still bears the name "Beaucarnea recurvata".
Today this plant, which belongs to the succulents family, is threatened with extinction by the disappearance of its natural habitat.
